Membership Terumah City Shul is a Jewish heart in the heart of Toronto, and our membership model reflects that spirit. Currently every synagogue member is asked to contribute their own financial terumah (offering) from their heart, within their own means. This is a self-assessment, using a recommended amount as a guide. For City Shul to operate with only terumah (plus school tuition) would require approximately $2236 of terumah per membership unit. We have historically set our recommended amounts at much less. We know that for most of our members, your terumah is your largest charitable donation and a significant part of your annual spending. We are deeply grateful to our many members who make a real sacrifice to give a terumah amount within their means, and we are deeply grateful to our many members who give much more than the recommended amount, thereby effectively subsidizing those with financial needs and ensuring that we never turn anyone away for financial reasons. Terumah is 100% tax deductible. Tax receipts will be issued early in February of 2023 via email.
If you need to discuss any financial arrangements, please contact us at connect@cityshul.com. If you are joining after the High Holidays, and wish to have your terumah reduced by a prorated amount based on how many months remain in the membership year, or if you purchased High Holiday tickets and wish to apply the cost of your High Holiday tickets to your terumah, please indicate your chosen annual amount (before the prorating or the ticket cost), and contact us at connect@cityshul.com.
