Membership Terumah

City Shul is a Jewish heart in the heart of Toronto, and our membership model reflects that spirit. Every synagogue member is asked to contribute their own financial Terumah (offering) from their heart, within their own means.

For City Shul to operate with only Terumah and school tuition, we would require approximately $2910.00 of Terumah per membership unit.

We know that for most of our members, your Terumah is your largest charitable donation and a significant part of your annual spending. We are deeply grateful to our many members who make a real sacrifice to give a Terumah amount within their means. We are deeply grateful to our many members who give much more than the recommended amount. You help those with financial needs. For our part, we never turn anyone away for financial reasons, we never ask anyone to prove their financial need or provide documents, and we never ask why someone is giving less.

Terumah is 100% tax deductible. Tax receipts will be issued early in February 2025 via email.

Family members over 25 yrs old must hold their own membership.

If you need to discuss any financial arrangements, please contact us at connect@cityshul.com.

If you are joining after the High Holidays, and wish to have your terumah reduced by a prorated amount based on how many months remain in the membership year, or if you purchased High Holiday tickets and wish to apply the cost of your High Holiday tickets to your terumah, please indicate your chosen annual amount (before the prorating or the ticket cost), and contact us at connect@cityshul.com.

Prayer books - $20

To create an inclusive experience, each adult should have the Gates of Repentance prayer book. This is the Prayer Book that we use exclusively for High Holiday services, and a pdf of this book is not available. If you have a copy of this book from past City Shul High Holiday services, you do not need to purchase a copy.

Please note that we do not provide prayer books and there are no loaners or book sales at services.
Please note that this book is "out of print", so we are able to sell you used books in excellent condition at a lower price.

All prayer books will be ready for you to pick up at your first service. Please note we do not mail or deliver prayer books. The cost of books is not tax-deductible.

1. At the check-in desk for Erev Rosh Hashanah, Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidre or Yom Kippur
2. At the September 23 "Music, Meditation and Midrash" Event - 10:00 am. Registration is required for this event; the location will be sent out to registrants a few days in advance.
3. If you are watching on the live stream, please send an email to the office HERE, to discuss an alternate pickup arrangement.
