Take for me an offering (terumah), from every person whose heart moves them... Exodus 25:1
City Shul will be sustained by membership gifts called Terumah, from the Biblical verse in Exodus "Take for me a offering (terumah), from every person whose heart moves them..." Every member is asked to contribute his or her own financial Terumah (offering) from their heart, within their own means, self-assessed, using our suggested range as a guide. Skills and time are also valued as Terumah and can be combined with financial gifts for those with limited means.
With your Terumah we are able to offer you high holy day tickets, services and events all year, life cycle events with our Rabbi, yartzeit notices and mention of names at closest service, meetings, visits and personal guidance from our Rabbi where appropriate, a full tax receipt, and a chance to be a pioneer!
City Shul will not only be sustained by financial gifts. We ask that you make a spiritual gift through a membership covenant (brit). That brit confirms that you are in agreement with the principles of the City Shul, and that you commit to our three banners of
Torah: by attending at least one City Shul education programme a year (in addition to religious school);
Avodah: Worship: by attending at least one City Shul service a year (in addition to High Holy Days); and
Gemilut Chasadim: Acts of Lovingkindness: by attending at least one City Shul social action/tikkun olam event or programme a year, by volunteering for one of our Tikkun Olam projects, or by financially donating to our Tikkun Olam efforts.
Our brit is designed to help us build a welcoming and inclusive community where everyone has a voice and a place.
Membership Terumah
It is rare for a synagogue to operate on Terumah alone and City Shul is no different. Doing so would require between $2200-$2800 per member unit. City Shul’s open encouragement of membership by individuals and families with limited financial means results in our Shul having a greater than average number of member units that pay Terumah at a low level.
Currently every synagogue member is asked to contribute his or her own financial Terumah (offering) from their heart, within their own means. This is a self-assessment, using a recommended amount as a guide. While the spirit of this payment model reflects the spirit of City Shul, the synagogue has fixed financial obligations to employees for administration, clergy and general operating expenses and overhead.
If you need to discuss any financial arrangements, please contact leadershipteam@cityshul.com.
